Free Patent Drawing Templates and Checklists

Drawing sheet templates with built-in margin guides, a reference numeral register, and a pre-filing checklist — everything is readable on this page and downloadable below.

All resources on this page are free to use, with no registration and no attribution required (attribution is welcome, but never mandatory). Use them in client work, internal wikis, or your own filing workflow.

The templates are drafting aids only. They do not constitute legal advice — always verify the current rules of your patent office before filing.

Drawing Sheet Templates

Three page templates with margin guide lines already placed at the official minimums. Draw inside the guides, then delete the guide layers before filing.

USPTO — US Letter
USPTO utility and design filings on US Letter paper.

21.6 × 27.9 cm (8.5 × 11 in)

  • • Margin guides at the 37 CFR 1.84(g) minimums: top 2.5 cm, left 2.5 cm, right 1.5 cm, bottom 1.0 cm.
  • • Keep every line of the drawing inside the guided sight area.

USPTO — A4
USPTO filings prepared on A4 paper.

21.0 × 29.7 cm (A4)

  • • Margin guides at the 37 CFR 1.84(g) minimums: top 2.5 cm, left 2.5 cm, right 1.5 cm, bottom 1.0 cm.
  • • Same rule set as the Letter template, on A4 geometry.

PCT / EPO — A4
PCT international applications and EPO filings.

21.0 × 29.7 cm (A4)

  • • Margin guides at the PCT Rule 11.6(c) minimums: top 2.5 cm, left 2.5 cm, right 1.5 cm, bottom 1.0 cm.
  • • A conservative baseline that also travels well into national phase.

Before filing, delete the guide layers inside the template — the two groups named "margin-guides" and "guide-labels". They exist only to help you position the drawing and must not appear on submitted sheets.

Reference Numeral Register
A simple register that keeps reference numerals consistent between your figures and your specification.
  • • One row per reference numeral: the numeral, the part name, the figure where it first appears, its location in the specification, and a status.
  • • Status values: draft / confirmed / removed. Never reuse a removed numeral.
  • • Cross-check both directions before filing: every numeral used in the figures appears in the specification, and every numeral cited in the specification appears in at least one figure.

Pre-Filing Drawing Checklist

Run this checklist on the final figure set before submission. The full checklist is shown below and matches the downloadable PDF.

Sheet & margins
  • ☐ Sheet size matches the target office (USPTO: US Letter or A4; CNIPA, EPO, JPO, KIPO, PCT: A4).
  • ☐ Margins meet the minimums: top 2.5 cm, left 2.5 cm, right 1.5 cm, bottom 1.0 cm.
  • ☐ No frames or borders drawn around the sight area.
  • ☐ Drawing sheets are numbered separately and consecutively.
Line quality
  • ☐ Solid black lines only — no grayscale, no color.
  • ☐ No anti-aliased gray edges: inspect edges at 400–800% zoom.
  • ☐ Lines survive reduction to two-thirds size without breaking or merging.
  • ☐ Shading follows patent conventions (spaced line or stipple shading, used sparingly).
Views & figures
  • ☐ Every claimed feature is visible in at least one figure.
  • ☐ Figure numbers are consecutive and match the brief description of the drawings.
  • ☐ Section views carry cut lines and matching section labels.
  • ☐ Design filings: the view set is complete (front, rear, top, bottom, both sides, perspective).
Reference numerals
  • ☐ The same part carries the same numeral in every figure.
  • ☐ Figures and specification are cross-checked in both directions.
  • ☐ Lead lines are clear, uncluttered, and touch the parts they reference.
  • ☐ Numerals stay readable after reduction (USPTO minimum height 0.32 cm).
Text & language
  • ☐ In-figure text is kept to a minimum — prefer numerals plus the specification.
  • ☐ Any remaining words match the specification terminology exactly.
  • ☐ Text is in the language of the application.
Final pass
  • ☐ Print at 100% scale and measure the margins physically.
  • ☐ Export format matches the office filing requirements.
  • ☐ Vector source files are archived for future amendments.
