How many figures does a typical utility patent need?
Five to twelve for a moderately complex invention. Simpler inventions can pass with three. The right number is whatever the spec and claims actually need to reference — not a target on its own.
Can I file utility patent drawings in color?
Under 37 CFR 1.84(a)(2) the USPTO accepts color drawings with a petition and additional fee, and only when color is necessary to disclose the invention. Default to black-and-white line art.
